Carlo Ratti—Chief Curator

An architect and engineer by training, Professor Carlo Ratti teaches at MIT, where he directs the Senseable City Laboratory, and is a founding partner of the international design and innovation practice Carlo Ratti Associati. A leading voice in the debate on new technologies’ impact on urban life, his work has been exhibited in several venues worldwide, including the Venice Biennale, New York’s MoMA, London’s Science Museum, and Barcelona’s Design Museum. Two of his projects – the Digital Water Pavilion and the Copenhagen Wheel – were hailed by Time Magazine as ‘Best Inventions of the Year’. He has been included in Wired Magazine’s ‘Smart List: 50 people who will change the world’. He is currently serving as co-chair of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council

on Cities and Urbanization, and as special advisor on Urban Innovation to the European Commission.

Meng Jianmin—Chief Curator

Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Chinese Architectural Design Master, Vice Chairman of ASC and Chief Architect of Shenzhen General Institute of Architectural Design Research Co. Ltd. Graduated from the Southeast University with a Ph.D. degree, he is also Distinguished Professor of Shenzhen University, Distinguished Professor of City University of Macau, and Vice Chairman of the Architectural Society of China (ASC).

 Meng Jianmin is one of the representative figures of architectural creation in China since the Reform and Opening-up. He has long been engaged in architectural design and theoretical research. He has presided hundreds of projects, won over 80 awards, and summed up the "Primitive (Benyuan) Design" theory. His publications include Primitive (Benyuan) Design, Implementation of Innovative Healthcare Design, Zero Gravity and many other works. He has a unique perspective on urban macro research, and was an early pioneer to advocate and explore smart city/architecture in China, with a series of research and practical achievements. He published On "Singular Architecture"; proposed a forward-looking theory of "Beyond Architecture" this year; and also led key national project New Methods and Tools of Goal and Effect Oriented Green Building Design.

Fabio Cavallucci—Chief Curator

Fabio Cavallucci is one of the most important contemporary art critics and curators. He is based in Milan, Italy. From 2001 to 2008, he directed the Galleria Civica of Contemporary Art of Trento. He coordinated Manifesta 7: The European Biennial of Contemporary Art (2008); he directed the 14th edition of the International Sculpture Biennale of Carrara (2010) and the Polish-Ukrainian section of the 1st Biennale of Kyiv (2012).

 From 2010 to 2014, he oversaw the Contemporary Art Centre of Ujazdowski Castle (Warsaw); he directed the Luigi Pecci Center for Contemporary Art in Prato from 2014 to 2017, that he re-opened with the large exhibition The End of the World after the realization of an extension in 2016. He worked with many of the most important international artists and architects. Among them Cai Guo-Qiang, Maurizio Cattelan, Paul McCarthy, Mario Merz, Zaha Hadid.

South China-Torino Collaboration Lab (SCUT - Sun Yimin; Politecnico di Torino - Michele Bonino)—Academic Curator

Yimin SUN, the dean and doctoral supervisor of School of Architecture, South China University of Technology, has been awarded the Changjiang Scholar Distinguished Professor, the National Distinguished Teacher, the National Person of New Century Talents Project, the National Outstanding Mid-aged Expert, the first Guangdong Master of Engineering Survey & Design, and the State Council Expert for Special Allowance. Concurrently he is also the Deputy Director of the State Key Laboratory of the Subtropical Building Science, the Executive Committee of ASC (the Architectural Society of China), the Deputy Directorof the Sports Architecture Committee of the China Sports Science Society, and a Member of the Urban Design Expert Committee of the Housing and Urban-Rural DevelopmentMinistry. In 1992, he gained a Ph.D. degree from the School of Architecture, Harbin Institute of Technology. From 1995 to 1997, he was a senior visiting scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and served in SASAKI Associates Inc. in America.

Prof. Sun has beenfocusing on the scientific research and engineering practice in large-scale public building and urban design for years.He has directed 4 research projects of NSFC (the National Natural Science Foundation of China), including an international cooperationanda key project. In terms of engineering practice, he has completed more than 60 design projects of sports facilities, including two in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, namely the Wrestling Hall and the Badminton Hall, andthree in the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, namely the Wushu Hall, Judo Wrestling Hall and the Swimming & Diving Hall. With these projects, he won 4 times the highest international awards for sports facilities (IAKS Awards), and received more than 40 prizes, such as the Gold and Silver Award of the National Prime-quality Project, the Tien-yow Jeme Civil Engineering Prize, the First Prize of the China Survey & Design Award, etc. In addition to the public buildings, he has also hosted more than 60 urban design projects in Guangzhou, Nanjing, Chongqing, Wuhan, Chengdu, etc. With these projects, he won the ‘Sustainable Design Award’ from the BSA (Boston Society of Architects) of the AIA (American Institute of Architects), anda series of national excellence awards for urban planning and design in China. Now he works as the regional chief urban designer, taking charge of the urban design and regulatory plan optimization works in the Pazhou West District of Guangzhou, as well as in the Lingshan Island Area of the Guangzhou Nansha Free Trade Zone.

Michele Bonino—Academic Curator

For almost 160 years, the Politecnico di Torino ( has been one of the most prestigious public institutions at both the international and the Italian levels concerning education, research, technological transfer and services in all sectors of architecture and engineering. It runs research and design services in the field of architecture and urbanization in China through its research center China Room

Polito has been based in Guangdong Province since 2015, having opened the South China-Torino Collaboration Lab in SCUT premises in Guangzhou.

Science and Human Imagination Center of Southern University of Science and Technology (Wu Yan)—Co-Curator

Chinese science fiction writer, Professor in the Humanities Center and Director of the Research Center of Sciences and Human Imagination of Southern University of Science and Technology in China, vice Chairman of the China Science Writers’ association, cofounder of the World Chinese Science Fiction Association and the Chinese Nebula Awards. Publishing science fiction since 1979, he has written several novels including Xin Ling Tan Xian (The Adventure of the Heart) and Sheng Si Di Liu Tian (Life and Death on the Sixth Day). He is the only doctorate tutor in China on science fiction and published a systematic analysis of this genre. He also served as the creative consultant of several Chinese TV series. With writings winning multiple awards in China and his role as editor-in-chief for many science fiction series, he has been invited to talk in many countries all around the globe. 

Politecnico di Milano (Adalberto Del Bo)—Curator of UABB GBA Academy

Adalberto Del Bohas a degree in Architecture from the Politecnico di Milano and has taught in Pescara, Venice and Milano, where he is currently full Professor in Architectural and Urban Composition, teaching Architectural and Urban Design at the School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering, for which he has alsoserved as DeputyDean.


A member of the Politecnico di Milano Administrative Board in the ’90s, he has also been a board member of the Fondazione Politecnico di Milano and a delegate for South-Central Asia relationships. From 2014 to 2017 he wasVice-President of the EAAE (European Association for Architectural Education).


Adalberto Del Bo has lectured in many countries and has contributed tonumerous public buildings, architectural projects and studies on theoretical and practical aspects of architectural and urban design, issues on which he has also organized exhibitions and chaired international conferences.

Executive Curators

Daniele Belleri [CRA]—Executive Curator

Daniele Belleri is Editor and Head of Communications at CRA design and innovation practice. He is in charge of managing all curatorial, editorial and communication projects of the office, contributing to an ongoing investigation on the impact of digital technologies on the built environment and society at large. Before joining CRA, heran a London-based strategic design agency advising cultural organizations in Europe and Asia, and spent a period as a researcher at Moscow’sStrelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design. A journalist by background, he has written extensively on design, technology and urban issues on international publications, including Wired Italy, Wired UK, Domus, Volume, CoBo Social and IL Magazine.

Edoardo Bruno—Executive Curator

Edoardo Bruno is an architectwhoearned a PhD from the Politecnico di Torino in 2018 in Architecture, History and Project, with a dissertation on the Guangzhou southern urban extension.From 2015 he has been responsible for the activities of the South China – Torino Collaboration Lab, a joint research center between the South China University of Technology and thePolitecnico di Torino. He was among the curators of the Italian Pavilion realized during the 2018 Shenzhen Design Week as well as a project architect for the transformation of the Oxygen Factory within the Big Air Venue for the XXIV Olympic Winter Games, Shougang - Beijing 2022.He is currently Research Assistant at the Politecnico di Torino and a member of the China Room research team.Since 2009 he is among the founders of the Italian design firm 2MIX.

Chen Qiufan—Executive Curator

Chen Qiufan(A.K.A. Stanley Chan) is a representative member of China’s new generation of speculative fiction authors. He is known for his stylistic combination of realism and New Wave, and has been called “China’s William Gibson”. His works have been translated into many languages and received multiple domestic and international awards including 9 Chinese Nebula Awards(China counterpart of Hugo Award), 3 Galaxy Awards and World F&SF Translation Award. His representative works include The Waste Tide(English Edition translated by Ken Liu, will be published by Tor, Head of Zeus, Penguin and Random House in US/UK/Germany/Spain in 2019), Censored, and Future Disease,The Age of Posthuman, The Algorithm for Life. 

KUANG Danyi - Executive Curator

Kuang Danyi graduated from the University of Leeds, UK, with a Master Degree in Cultural, Creative and Entrepreneurship. She is currently the Brand Director of Meng Architects, Shenzhen General Institute of Architectural Design Research Co. Ltd. She has coordinated several architectural publications and professional periodicals, and been associated with many professional media and mass media. She has been active as a coordinator in the field of exhibitions including the Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture, Shenzhen and Hong Kong (2007), New Chinese Architecture at CA’ASI, the 12th Venice Biennale of Architecture (2010), Shangyuan Art Museum Synopsis Exhibition in Beijing (2010), Contemporary Chinese Architecture Exhibition in London (2012), the 11th Biennale International Design Saint-Etienne (2019) as well as many.

Manuela Lietti—Executive Curator

Manuela Liettiis an Italian independent art critic and curator specialized in contemporary Asian art. In 2003, she graduated from the department of Oriental Languages and Civilizations at the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, having written her bachelors’ thesis on contemporary Chinese art. In 2007, she obtained her master’s degree in Chinese History of Art and Art Criticism from the Academy of Art and Design of Tsinghua University. Since 2003, Manuela has been active as a curator, critic, and coordinator in the field of gallery and museum exhibitions as well as public art projects, in China and abroad. Manuela has worked with various institutions, included: The Venice Biennale, The Israel Museum, CAFA Art Museum, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Carrara Sculpture Biennale, The Chinese Ministry of Culture, Three Shadows Photography Art Centre, The Italian Pavilion at the 2009 Shanghai Expo, Massimo De Carlo gallery, Galleria Continua. She is a correspondent for the art magazine Arte e Critica (Art and Criticism) and contributes to a number of other art publications included Frieze, Flash Art, Artforum,, Vision and She lives and works in Beijing, China. 

Wang Kuan—Executive Curator

Xu Haohao—Executive Curator

Haohao XU, Associate Professor in the School of Architecture at South China University of Technology,founder of the FaanNguk Kei organization for Cantonese building heritage conservation, senior architect at Urban Elephant Architects, Ph.D in architectural history and theory, Ph.D in economics. HaohaoXu curated the global exhibition tour of YESTERDAY / TOMORROW: 50 Years of Urban Conservation and Innovation in Italy, andhas written numerous reviews of modern and contemporary architects.

Zhang Li—Executive Curator

Zhang Li, architect, writer, a fan of science fiction and promoter of architecture education to children. She is currently the Director of the Industrial Center of Shenzhen General Institute of Architectural Design and Research and the Management Director of Chief Designer team of the Shenzhen Bay Super Headquarters.A published writer of short stories and novels and a columnist. Currently working on the first-ever original book series on architecture education to children. Having previously worked for governmental organs for urban planning, state-owned real estate companies and major design groups, she has extensive experiences in urban planning, architecture, landscape design and design management. She has ties with local design firms in Shenzhen and is an expert in mobilizing resources from different industries.
